In pre-patriarchal times, women experienced deep community with one another. Together, they engaged in their spiritual activities, which included ecstatic dancing, art creation, weaving, and more. In fact, in pre-patriarchal times, all activities were spiritual ones.

And the women were deeply nourished in this capacity. Together, they connected with the divine mother, who was the mother of all. 

The womb energy was sacred and holy. It was represented in cave art and artifacts that have survived in the forms of spirals and thrones and the caves themselves were perceived to be within the womb of the goddess.

The Divine Mother Womb was safe, nourishing, holy. Through the Mother, they were cared for and loved, held.

Their connection to her nurtured connection with one another. There was no competition, for it was through their cooperation that they thrived.

And it was within the womb of the Divine Mother, to whom all women were connected through their blood - their moon time - the blood that allowed them to birth new life as the divine creatrices that they were.

As clans moved out of the caves and into agricultural communities, and began to drift into what we know to be the familial structure that has survived to today, women found another way to connect with one another:

The menstrual huts.

Within the cloth drapings of the huts, women gathered in the dark of the moon to bleed together. And within the “womb” of the tent, they immersed themselves in the energy of the Divine Mother.

There, they boundaried themselves from the larger community and created space in which they did not need to serve others. Instead, they held one another in their sacred healing temple where they were able to connect to Source, heal and commune.

As the patriarchy gained more and more power, these tents became more important for the women of the time. Even as they became “banished” to them for being dirty or impure during their menses, the huts were a place where they could deeply prioritize and care for themselves.

That is why we must remember:

Prior to the patriarchy, self-care was encouraged. Women were supported and they held one another in the energy of the community in which they lived. They operated from a space of feeling filled with their connection to the goddess and themselves.

The Mother was honored and respected. She was sacred life force energy in motion, an incarnation of the Goddess herself.

It wasn’t until the patriarchy rose to power that the Mother archetype became twisted, one of sacrifice for the man and the male lineage, in which the mother became a martyr to sacrifice, giving to all others over herself.

We see this transition in the stories of the Goddess, such as that of Hera, whose very name means “womb.” Pre-Zeus, Hera was a Mother goddess who had a consort but who was independent of him. She was a triple goddess who ruled the three stages of life and the moon and she presided over the “sacred marriage” of the lunar cow and the solar bull.

But with the rise of the patriarchy, this version of the venerated and independent goddess was upended. Hera became the temperamental and unruly goddess who sought revenge on other goddesses and women for her husband’s philandering behavior.

The patriarchy drove a wedge between women and made her subservient to the whims of man.

Self-sacrifice became the esteemed value.

Self-sacrifice was necessary to try to ensure safety.

Self-sacrifice became the norm because a woman who disobeyed became vulnerable to banishment and exile, as exemplified by Lilith who was banished for not obeying Adam.

It is time to reclaim your sovereignty around self-care.

It is your birthright to draw your personal boundaries and assert your needs.

Your capacity to connect into your gut instincts, to honor your intuition around your own needs, and ask to have them met is needed right now.

And so, when want to remember…

...and when we want to reclaim:

We gather in the sacred womb of the Red Tent with our community, our clan of brave and fierce and loving women who hold themselves and one another in the highest esteem.

And you will tap into that deep and potent Cancerian intuition that aligns you with the highest truth of who you are and how you can best nurture yourself in order to best nourish others.

You will travel to the past and connect into it in order to create a present timeline that can accelerate your ascension through radical and powerful self-care.

You will release bonds of codependency, victimization and sacrifice - all vestiges of toxic patriarchy - and set yourself up to experience goddess based consciousness and community.

The Red Tent Healing Temple is a place of rebirth.

It is the womb of regenerative life force energy.

Within the folds of the hut, what is no longer serving will die off, so that you may be reborn.

Gathering with women during moon time (whether you’re bleeding or not), is an extremely potent form of magic making.

Setting intentions with the new moon and coming together in community with other women who share your desire for healing, growth, magic, shedding and rebirth activates deep and hidden potential within you and it unlocks your ancestral connections to Red Tent practices.

It restores immense power to you. The power of who you have always been, but who has been brushed aside and locked away.
